This week, the library will be bidding farewell to Ms. Kawasaki, and welcoming Ms. Antoniou back as head of the Library Department. We are grateful for Ms. Kawasaki’s dedication during her time here, filling in for Mrs. Hall.
This Wednesday, Dec. 14th, 2011, wear purple to as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Purple Day is sponsored by FACES and ◙Earl Haig Secondary’s GSA.
Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Normally, it is observed on October 20, but Earl Haig SS has chosen this Wednesday to celebrate. Individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy — participants are asked to simply “go purple” on Wed. Dec. 14th as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are. (GLAAD)
Come to the library and check out some of our selections by writers such as Alex Sanchez (Rainbow High) or the White Pine nominee, Chance to Dance for You.

“During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Canadian Lt.-Col. John McCrae was inspired to write the poem In Flanders Fields on sighting the poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle.
The poem was a great inspiration in adopting the poppy as the Flower of Remembrance in Canada, France, the U.S, Britain and Commonwealth countries.”
