Researching a topic
>>
begin by reviewing the Green Guide (“GG”) to see the stages of the research process. See agenda for password.

Stage 1:  Brainstorm a list of  questions (GG 13-14) on your topic

  • Devise a list of search terms  you may use that relate to your topic.  Consider the synonyms or other names by which your topic may be called (e.g., Kubodu = Bushido)
  • Get an overview for your topic (context, background) using encyclopedias and reference texts on martial arts

Stage 2/3:   Using your search terms, find relevant academic websites and articles in academic journals

  • review the website evaluation sheet.  Make sure you are using websites that are affiliated with an academic or government institution.  Generally .edu, .gov, gov.on.ca
  • use [allintitle: _________] to find search term in the title of the page and [filetype:pdf] to find all documents of that type (pdfs are generally documents posted by academic and government institutions
